I'm in the middle of tearing down and rebuilding parts of the barn for some stable spaces, but I've run into a problem that I don't know how to solve. There is a chimney in the barn, made of regular stone, and the lower part that is in the actual stable is a bricked stove area. Of course, I want to remove that stove area to make room for a box there, but how do I do it?
If I break it down, the chimney will just "hang" there. Or? Can it be supported in some convenient way, say 2.50 above the floor?

Just one thing... stone, concrete (gravel), clay... any of those are heavy, are you sure it's still hanging? It could be that the entire chimney is standing on the floor in the "barn"? Barn with chimney? Isn't it an old cowshed? With ventilation pipes in concrete?
Yes, that was kind of my question, if it needs support from the floor or how the heck one should do it. It's a 100-year-old barn, but yes, it's a chimney, there's a stove inside the stable. A bit unusual maybe.

I'm not daring to answer that... not without having some idea of what it would stand on instead.
But if you're not going to use it, then why not remove it, feels like as much work to try to prop something up for it to stand on, but not on the floor (in the box), as to remove it.
Unless some other beams are resting on the murstock...

Isn't the ventilation provided by the chimney with natural draft needed when you plan to have horses there?
If it is an old chimney, it will likely require support from underneath. It might also be supporting something higher up.
In the past, builders often utilized the large, strong chimney stack to hang floor beams, etc.
Therefore, one must first know more about the construction before it can be determined how and if it can be demolished (meaning at a reasonable cost/work effort).

Okay, I'm going to take a closer look at how it's constructed with beams and so on. Regarding ventilation, no, we have opened up to the ridge and will also install mechanical ventilation.

Tap one stone at a time, throw it out... if it's mortared.
I haven't done it myself, but I've heard and read about others who have, and if it's old, it might not be that tough.

It's natural stone all the way, yes. Unfortunately, I don't have a picture. How high can it be, 10 meters maybe? It's about 2 meters above the roof tiles anyway.
