switch off columns?

As the picture shows. I would like to remove the pillar in the middle. There was previously a glass wall there, but now that I am building a patio, I would like to have it open. Would it work to cut the pillar at the top and install two 2"x9" that I've screwed and glued together in between? The span is about 180cm and it's on a gable...

It should work, but there is too little information you are providing.
What is the pillar supporting?
It looks like the beam on the long side that the rafters rest on is supported by this pillar?
