Hi!

I'm pondering something.

Isn't it very silly to nail the outer panel through the battens and the wall stud?

Then you have a nail that goes all the way from outside into the wall stud?

What do you think about that?

Thanks for the tips.

  • Illustration of wall structure showing components like horizontal panel, nail battens, vertical studs, insulation, and vapor barrier with labels.
Made a sketch.

  • Diagram illustrating a construction cross-section with labeled parts like wind barrier, wall stud, nail, and cladding board.
Why is it stupid? The panel must be nailed with nails of a certain length to sit properly, right?

Because then you have a nail that goes all the way into the wall stud.

When the nail gets cold -20 and warm +20, moisture will sneak into the stud.

It feels completely unnecessary.

I guess the panel would sit just as well if it were only nailed to the battens.

No one agrees with me?

Best regards

The moisture is in the air. Air doesn't come in those quantities through the hole where the nail is.

Now you've come up with a problem no one else knew existed!
Keep nailing it!

I bought shorter nails, so now I don't make more holes than necessary =)

Now I have standing board and batten paneling on my building. I have 28 mm spaced horizontally, 21 x 145 panel which is nailed with 50 mm galvanized wire nails. It won’t come loose, promise ;)

Yes, the part of the nail that goes into the drywall, insulation or whatever it is that doesn't "hold" doesn't do any good at all.

I understood it as you had standing battens attached outside the rules? In that case, the problem does not occur.

Hello!
Yes, vertical cladding attached on the outside of the studs.

But since the nails were about 70mm, they went through all the way to the studs, which was unnecessary.

Now with 50mm nails, I'm only fastening the cladding to the nailing battens.

Perfect. (Hope the cladding doesn't come loose from the nailing battens though.)

Regards ;)

They are probably screwed just to be safe.

Are the battens nailed well to the studs? I can't deny that, maybe I should glue them haha. Just kidding.
