I'm planning to build a canopy in front of my garage. For various reasons, I want the construction to have as little height as possible. The span is 270 cm and support is available at both ends. As roofing material, I am considering polycarbonate sheets or something similar. Since I want a low construction height, I am thinking of using some kind of steel beam. I know nothing about steel constructions, but I saw a square tube 40 x 40 x 3 in an online stock list, could this be sufficient for my needs? Are they also available galvanized?

Since you don't mention how far out from the wall you want the canopy, it's difficult to know the dimension of the square profile.
But with only 2 supports, there may be a risk that the profile can sag, despite a short distance of 2700mm. However, if you could fit 2 brackets on each side (with a gap), this would help significantly. As for galvanized profiles, you should look for companies that sell iron.
