No, don't ruin the beautiful timber wall with paint/stain! Dare to refuse shabby chic! We have an exposed timber wall in our extension (the old house's framework), combined with scrubbed floors, Morris wallpaper, and trim in English red, it becomes warm, cozy, and inviting! I can add a picture later! Not everything needs to be light and fresh!

Agree on shabby. Very overused and soon to be a dead trend even in Expressen's supplements, and unfortunately very difficult to do something about once you've slapped on white paint. Then it's quite a challenge to paint an old log wall with covering paint. If you don't spray paint, it's very hard to reach into all the nooks, so it risks looking half-finished.

In our previous house, the kitchen was an old cottage from 1900. During a complete renovation, we exposed and kept the backside of the chimney in brick, a standing log in the middle of the room, and part of a wall in pure timber. Now we've moved, so I can't take any clearer picture than this one. To give the timber a fresher surface and bind all the old fine dust that a hundred years of pests had fixed, I slapped on two layers of Cuprinol's Noble Stain with an ebony tone. It darkened the logs a bit, but without ruining the living surface. It looks a bit like the old parts of the Vasa ship. If you really want to hang on to the last gasp of the shabby trend and have the timber white, there is white-tinted stain too. Much more respectful to the old wood than painting with covering paint.

Dining area with a brick wall, dark pendant lamp, wooden bench, framed photos, and a table with a vase of tulips and salt and pepper shakers.

I agree that it would be ruined with a covering paint, but if you have a dark stain, it can enhance the wall. Really nice with the dark timber. I think :p
