I have quite a lot of rough-sawn lumber that is at least 15 years old (ranging from 2x2' to 2x10') which has previously been stacked outdoors under a tarp during these years. Now I'm considering moving the lumber into the woodshed, which is an unheated space. The most space-saving method would be to store them vertically (sorted into compartments, see image example) since the ceiling height is really good. But if that is completely unacceptable, then I guess I'll have to build a sturdy shelf, but that takes up floor space...

What would you have done?

  • Vertical stacks of lumber stored in metal racks inside a spacious, industrial-style warehouse with high ceilings and concrete floor.
Horizontal is best.

Have you considered getting a pallet rack or something similar to store the timber? If you don't have space for lumber compartments indoors, they can preferably be placed outside with a metal roof over them (avoid tarps on the timber).

Why is horizontal best? That is, assuming the vertical ones stand so vertically that they don't bend.
