Hello.
We are in the process of renovating our living room, which has a fireplace, and we want to spruce up the chimney. We've removed all the old wallpaper that previous owners had put up on it. On one side, we've reached the original plaster, so there I think it's just a matter of plastering with new plaster, and I've understood that lime plaster is preferred since it handles heat better. On the other side, someone has applied a thick layer of what I believe is regular wall filler, or do you think it's some other material? It's quite a thick layer and matches the rest of the wall, so maybe it's original? For your information, the left side with the filler is where the chimney/flue runs, and the right side is actually just a masonry load-bearing wall (the other walls in the house are wooden walls).

How do I handle the side with the filler, or whatever it is? Some options I'm considering:

Is it okay to plaster over this? This is what I would ideally like to do, so both sides look the same.
Can I apply another layer of filler? I've understood that it's not really recommended to apply filler on chimneys.
Or do I have to chip off the filler to reach the plaster and start from there?

Best regards,
Ulf
