I'm sitting here pondering my spring deck project and have hit a snag. The deck is going to be 5.5 meters wide and 2.4 meters deep, and I planned to place the support beam on 3 posts. Now it turns out that right where I intended to put the middle post, the sewer line comes out, which means it might be a bad idea to dig there.
Is it even worth trying to size the support beam for a span of 5.5 meters, or do I need to think of another way to solve it?

Glued laminated timber should handle 5.5 meters without major problems, but it will be a higher beam, and depending on how it looks, it might get cramped.
The alternative is four posts so that you get better points for the foundations.

Shouldn't it be possible to place the plinths 1 meter in, so there's an overhang on the support beams.
So, 3.5 meters between the plinths and then the support beams extend 1 meter on each side = 5.5 meters.
Then 45x220 should be sufficient, right...?

I might add that I am going to extend an existing balcony into a patio. It is 6.60 m wide and rests on 3 pillars. I plan to extend it with a 1.1 m wide staircase and a 5.5 meter wide patio. I want to align the new pillars with the existing ones as much as possible, but I might have to let that go and add an extra pillar.
