I have a terrace that I have demolished and will replace with a new one. Unfortunately, we have a post in the middle that we would like to remove. (See image below). The two posts in the picture are 140x45mm and support beams that are about 45x220. These beams are spliced in the middle on the post and run from the wall to the outermost post.
I unfortunately do not know exactly how they are attached inside the wall as I cannot see it, but where they go into the wall, it is only the right of the beams and the small "stump" that really goes into the wall. The left beam only goes up to the wall. There are more of these "stumps" along the beam and all 3 are nailed together there.
Is it possible to remove the post in the middle? If so, what type of dimensions do you need for the post that will stand in the corner (by the downpipe) and what dimensions for the beam that will go from the wall to the post?
The width of the terrace is about 6m and the depth from the patio door to the posts is about 2m. The posts are placed about 3m apart.
Including additional pictures, as I've seen in similar threads, that are usually requested. We live in snow zone 1.5.
Based on the photo from the attic, it looks like the rafters rest both on the outer wall and the beam at the edge of the veranda. If that's the case, the loads on the latter are quite modest. Replacing it with a 6 m long glued laminated timber beam would require approximately 90x270. The column can suffice with a 90x90 glued laminated timber pillar. You should have a rafter plan which would be interesting to see.
Hello and thank you for your response. Unfortunately, I can't find any more drawings in the documents I received when we bought the house and I interpret it as if we should have had them?
It depends a bit on when the house was built and what kind of house it is. It would have been a simple way to verify my assessment. Based on how it looks today, however, you can always calculate backwards. Is it a 45x220 with at most 3 m span?
Unfortunately, my knowledge is very limited regarding that, and the only thing I find in the drawings/documents is that it is a single-family house that is custom-built.
