Hello,

I have an old single door leading out to the patio. It's starting to become damp and warped. I was thinking of installing a double door or alternatively two narrow floor-to-ceiling windows on either side of the door. The facade is made of brick.

Question, do I need to create a beam of reinforced brick or similar as a lintel if I open up that much? Or can I simply just make the opening larger?

Thanks / Ulrik

Depends on whether the brick wall is load-bearing or not, many exterior walls have bricks laid outside a wooden wall or framework construction.

Can you check in some way or do you know what it looks like?

If the wall is "freestanding," then it should just be a matter of taking down the upper courses and if you want to create a neat finish above.

Even a facade brick wall (skin wall) is load-bearing in the sense that it supports itself. If you simply increase the width of the opening without reinforcing above the opening, the wall will crack above the opening and the stones will fall down. If the opening does not become very large and the loads above are not too unfavorable, you can insert reinforcement afterwards in the bed joint or embed an angle iron/flat steel over the opening.

Draw the wall and post the sketch here, and probably someone can tell you how to proceed!
