I was thinking of changing the facade this summer. Vertical boards without air gap nailed directly onto asfabord. The boards are spaced about 5 mm apart.

I am considering whether I should put a sheet metal between the facade boards and the decking.

How is it usually done when the decking is close to the facade?

  • Gap between wooden deck and vertical siding with visible nails; consideration for adding metal flashing for protection.

Thinking that I might get a sheet like this:

Yellow wooden planks above a metal sheet, possibly used to prevent water from hitting the deck and soaking the wood end grain.

I think it would prevent water from bouncing on the decking and soaking the end grain.

However, I'm not sure if I'm thinking correctly?

Following as we have the same issue, though the distance between the decking and the facade end grain is slightly larger but still rotted.

One option I've considered is cutting a piece of the decking and allowing the facade to run down under the decking, what do you think about that? Based on your screw heads, it should be possible for you as well?

I'm kind of thinking about skipping the metal sheet. If I install the metal sheet, the water will bounce off it and onto the end grain instead of, as it is now, bouncing off the deck and onto the end grain.

Isn't it easier to cut a few cm off the decking and let the panel go down underneath so you don't get any splash at all? However, you have to paint before you put up the panel, at least at the lower end.

No, it is not applicable because I have just installed a plastic strip (pordränlist) under the current decking to divert any possible water away from the foundation wall.

Anyone have input on whether it's appropriate to install a plåtlist?

?

Now you will have new panel but if you were to install a sacrificial board as shown in the link, there is still a possibility for the end grain to absorb water/snow that has settled on top of the sacrificial board.

I am still on the fence.

Here was some more information:

Don't know if the sheet metal makes any difference, water can still run onto the deck under the sheet metal. I usually just take sill paper that I attach a bit up under the facade cladding and then let it stick down in the gap between the house and the deck. This way you get protection against rainwater sneaking in under the panel, and it is directed down towards the foundation wall.

Sure, but water running on the decking does not affect the end grain of the facade boards.

No, that's true, but do you need to position the panel so close to the decking? If you finish 1cm above, it should be fine. Otherwise, the suggestion of using a sacrificial board is good. Or use horizontal paneling ;)

Today there is 3 cm between ök deck board and uk fascia board.
