Hi, we are looking at a house that we plan to buy, and in the basement, the ceilings are made of sheet metal or aluminum. The paint has flaked off in practically all the rooms; I guess it was painted a long time ago. I've never heard of sheet metal ceilings in a villa before, and I can't find anything when I google it. Does anyone have knowledge about this? Is it difficult to remove old paint and repaint, or should the ceiling be removed (which would of course significantly increase the cost)? There are very large areas (several rooms) that need to be painted or replaced.

Grateful for any answers.

I guess the sheet metal was installed because there was originally plaster on the ceilings. When the plaster fell down or got damaged, everything was covered with sheet metal.
If you remove the sheet metal, there will probably be a lot to repair...

Thanks, is there anything negative about having a metal sheet ceiling? More problems with moisture or paint peeling easily, given how much has already peeled.

Is it difficult to paint when it's metal sheet?

It sounds a bit sterile with sheet metal on the ceiling? If it's not a living area, it might not matter as much, and it might not be as important to get a perfect result.

In that case, it should be enough to go over the ceiling with a wire brush, possibly a primer before the final painting. If there are many square meters, you can spray paint, otherwise, it works to roll it.

If the basement is a living space, the question is whether you should put up something else as a ceiling. For example, drywall. In that case, you would screw battens into the concrete ceiling and then screw the drywall onto them.

If the paint adheres poorly, it might be aluminum? The metal is greasy and must be cleaned thoroughly before painting. Tap on the sheet and try to listen to what material it is.

It is living space, but if it's already metal, what does it do when it's covered with paint (assuming it stays on)?

Is there anything negative about metal otherwise?

Thinking it's a lot of money and work to replace the ceiling, but I'll change if metal ceilings are "known" for the paint to come off relatively quickly, for example.

Thank you in advance

Technically, it doesn't matter, but it probably feels a bit like a public building from the '70s.

However, it actually sounds a bit strange that the paint has come off; in a good indoor environment, the paint should last indefinitely.

My hope is that the wrong type of ceiling paint was used on the metal and that it peeled after 15-20 years because of this (it's not freshly painted). I'm curious if anyone has experience with metal ceilings in living spaces (basement) or knowledge about it. Strange that nothing comes up when you search for it, it must be quite uncommon, right?
