Hello!

We have torn out our basement as our ground slab was absorbing moisture. We will now drain and rebuild the basement.

We are insulating from the outside and will use steel studs on the walls. We will lay tiles and have a polished concrete floor.

But what kind of board material can be used on the walls? There are different opinions on this, and many say that inorganic materials should be used. But what counts as inorganic material?

Regards, Carolina Sabell

Concrete, mortar, stone, brick, metal, plastic, glass.

I.e., not materials that wholly or partially contain wood, cardboard, paper, textiles, wheat/rye (starch).

Feel free to Google inorganic materials for a better understanding.

The answer is essentially no boards. If you want to take a chance, then steel studs with good ventilation and gypsum is a solution. But there is always a risk of mold and moisture problems. It's hard to know for you and for us.

There are also fiber cement boards. Wet room gypsum board and facade gypsum board should also work well to use.

Fiber cement should work well, but it is better to plaster the walls and paint with silicate paint. Then it's not as dependent on active ventilation.

Absolutely!
But if you're going to build new interior walls, it might be smart to use fiber cement if you're not keen on masonry!

Oh, yes. Didn't think about interior walls.

But why wouldn't you want to build with bricks? ;)

It's perfectly fine to have regular drywall on interior walls as long as there is a distance from the floor/slab. Easier to paint than having to deal with masonry and plastering, etc.
