At the scrap yard in Uppsala, at least a few years ago, you could put on a high-visibility vest and go out to search, then go in to weigh and pay. Unfortunately, everything there tends to be very dented and broken. You need to be lucky to find something useful before they compact the piles with a machine.
Then it's just a matter of reading the classifieds in all the local ad papers and searching for terms like "scrap collected." There are plenty of small traders a bit out in the countryside. They are usually happy to sell scrap as well. Small scrap dealers in rural areas tend to be better at handling useful items like longer lengths of beams, stainless pipes, and such, with a bit more care. They get significantly more money for a straight beam than they do for the equivalent beam as scrap to melt down.
