Hello. I have a roughly 20 cm wide area of rot in the top rail where the flashing rests. Is there any "compound" I can fill this with, after removing the decayed material? Or does the entire piece need to be replaced with new wood? Grateful for tips. Damaged beam with a rotted area approximately 20 cm wide, showing peeling paint and exposed wood, part of a renovation discussion regarding repair solutions.

Change it, it's the only right thing!

If there is no load on the överliggaren, maybe you can put a sheet over it. It might be a bit quicker than replacing it.

If you fill it with some klet, you still have to paint the klet afterwards, and then it's not that much more work to paint the entire replacement board.
