Hello! I'm sitting here pondering a future project. Building a roof over the basement stairs. This past spring, I built a new wall with leca and made stairs down to the basement door. I don't even have a railing right now, and the plan is to build some sort of roof over the stairs to prevent rain and snow from getting in there.

The stairs are level with a gable (the door in the middle of the gable), so a roof with the same pitch as the house roof seems quite sensible. Does anyone have photos or links? I haven't found much on the forum about this.

Some clever person might have an idea on how to make a simple horizontal door over the entrance instead. I have a wooden facade that sticks out about 10 cm from the basement foundation, so the problem is that when the door is closed, it preferably should be under the facade against the foundation, and then the door must be able to lift/open without hitting the underside of the facade.

I need some sort of hinge that allows the door to move away from the wall before lifting it up.

Kudos to anyone with a great tip! :)

I vote for a roof... a horizontal door is both ugly and "impractical". Sure, you can get rid of the rainwater, but hopefully, you've placed a drain at the bottom of the stairs?!...I would have put a roof over it... would have made it with overhang so it sheds water even if it blows hard...

Yes, there is a well.

I think a roof sticks out and becomes uglier than a smooth, flat door painted the same color as the basement wall.
I can agree that a door can become impractical, heavy to open, etc., but I'll have to think about it.

The thing is, it stings a bit to start screwing up support beams and sawing into the new nice paneling we put up. :)

I made the roof and walls, with a beam placed along the edge of the basement stairs supporting the beams with a support line on top, a support line attached to the wall, with the same slope as the house roof, raw board-tarpaulin-sheet metal. Built a door with the same panel as the walls, turned out very functional and several have said it also looks nice :)

A horizontal door sounds heavy, cumbersome, impractical, and not so good-looking that it's worth the trouble. I might take a picture with my phone tomorrow and try to put it here but I can't promise I know how to do it :)
