Hello! I'm planning to build a carport attached to our guest house.
6000 long and approximately 4500 wide (which also becomes the opening)
Can this be done with regular construction timber, or will the span be too long for the rafters?
Snow load zone 3.5

No, it cannot be done with construction timber. Glulam is required. If the roof beams are 4.5 m long and spaced at c/c 600 mm, you should use at least 42x315 mm or an equivalent dimension.

You can very well reduce the opening to 3 meters and have a support beam there, then an overhang of 1.5 meters.

Sounded smart but I didn't understand :)
Do you mean an opening of 3 meters and placing the posts there? I would like to have the car (2200) and the trailer (2000) next to each other.

I see that Bauhaus only has 42x225 and then 56x225 and 56x270. Could going up to 1200cc and using a thicker dimension make it cheaper?

Overhangs as large as 0.75 m per side do not work with construction-grade timber. I think it's a bad idea to reduce the opening at the expense of functionality.

You can use 90x315 on c/c 1200 mm.

Thanks! Not free those.... 1.895:- :( but cheaper than thinner and c/c 600

If you want to keep the cost as low as possible with glulam, you should choose beams that are as narrow and tall as possible, since these are more material-efficient. However, this often only works up to a certain limit.
