We are considering converting part of our house into a rental area with its own entrance and two "hotel rooms" each with their own bathroom.

However, thoughts immediately come to mind of guests stomping through the entrance and corridor with snowy shoes, resulting in meltwater.

How do those who build for public spaces manage? Is it even possible to have a rental where the floor has drywall, wooden joists, and insulation - or do you risk completely destroying your house?

A sturdy plastic mat or rubber mat with an upturn is something I usually see.
Sure, water, etc. stays, but someone is there to clean, or it eventually evaporates.
