Hello,

I have a large masonry open fireplace that takes up a lot of space, and I want to replace it with a freestanding stove. This means that instead of the fireplace, which has pipes going up into the chimney, I want to brick up the wall and take out pipes to a freestanding stove.

What should I consider when taking down the open fireplace, for example:

- a particular type of brick to brick up the wall around the pipe to the chimney?
- does the masonry work need to be performed by a professional for it to be approved by a chimney sweep/fire inspector?

Grateful for all good advice.
