Hello everyone,

My partner and I have just bought our first house, a villa from 1958 (renovated in 1975) where the previous owner did major renovations (including drainage in 2014 and a renovated basement in 2015-2016). The house has half the basement below ground and the other half facing the parking area. The basement has been renovated in such a way that there are enclosed walls in certain places and even raised floors with parquet in the "bodega," while the other half is tiled and plastered. Everything looks super fresh and there's no unusual smell, but you never know what's happening behind the organic materials. There's also a sauna.

The inspection didn't include a moisture measurement, and we have opted to buy into the seller's inspection and will have a walkthrough on site at the end of the week. Should we order an extended inspection with a moisture measurement in the basement? How can you tell if it has been renovated "correctly," i.e., with metal studs, I assume? Or should we just leave it as it is and remove all organic material if we start to smell odors or see moisture traces? Or is it too late by then?

It feels like a shame to tear up something so new without knowing if it's necessary, but we also don't want to end up with a big problem down the line. We are not knowledgeable in this area, so all tips are welcome!
