Render on wooden pillar?

I have two wooden pillars with some kind of render on our entrance steps, which are painted to look like concrete pillars. Now the render is starting to come off at the bottom and the wood is peeking through. It seems like a bad idea to render wood and then paint with moisture in mind. What should I do? Remove all the render and paint the wood directly, or just remove the loose render and re-render?
