Hello,

My partner and I have recently acquired a house. In our closed staircase, which is "integrated" into the house, there is a carpet.

Having pulled off a few steps, the carpet comes off relatively easily but there seems to be some kind of foam or remnants of the carpet left. After a lot of effort, we managed to remove this as well, only to find a layer of glue that is firmly attached to the wood underneath. I also think there might be varnish after the glue.
We got it off with denatured alcohol, a putty knife, and 4 hours of sweat, for half a step. I also managed to superficially damage the wood in the process.

Initially, we considered removing the carpet and laying laminate, but since the wood looked so good where we checked, we thought we’d try to remove it to treat the wood underneath.

Can anyone recommend a suitable tool for this? As mentioned, we want to get it down to bare wood.

Hello Robba,

Thank you for your response. It seems like it's going to be hard work. Do you have any good tips on how to remove the carpet/foam-like material? I have looked at carpet removers, but they seem way too big and cumbersome for this :/

Ran with a paint scraper for house siding. Plowed through 16 steps in 20 minutes!
