Hi, I'm working on casting pillars for the carport. For today's pillar, it was a bit difficult to dig at the end, so the hole ended up being only about 1.3 meters deep. My question is:

I first cast a footing directly on some macadam at the bottom. There was maybe 6-7 cm of macadam and then concrete. The rebar and the hole weren't as deep as I wanted, so the bar is basically lying entirely against the macadam in the concrete.

Will it be a problem with the "shallow" rebar? It's still 1.2 meters down, so it shouldn't rust much down there, right? I secured the casting mold, which is 1.2 meters and 20 cm in diameter, in the wet concrete. I'll finish casting the pillars another day.

Ordinary reinforcement in carbon steel should not be exposed without concrete surrounding it; simply being in the ground is not sufficient for protection. It is the high pH value in concrete that provides corrosion protection. Any other workarounds will lead to a shortened lifespan of the structure regarding the reinforcement's function.
