Some questions regarding the rebuilding of a small open fireplace I have. Some tiles were cracked and some were loose, so I took them all down.
I have taken down all the firebrick, one side is logically quite black, is it possible to turn them so the old backside faces outward when I put them back up? Or will the mortar adhere less if there is soot?
Should one prime anything before applying the mortar? Or is water enough?
