I have a hall that was previously covered in dark panels with various moldings. I have torn everything down, and underneath there is a fairly damaged surface in some areas. How can I best solve this? Some boards are not completely level at the moment. I feel that the problem areas will be around the doors (see images). My current idea is to tear down all the masonite and then put up 6mm gypsum boards. Another option I've considered is patching the uneven areas with masonite + filler. But that doesn't seem like a good solution. I've also thought about bringing in a carpenter to sort it all out.

I don't want to tip you one way or the other. But sometimes it's better to tear everything down and start over.
Good luck!
