I'm going to repoint the foundation wall and have knocked and chipped away the loose parts. The foundation is a mix where some parts are old stone and other parts are leca or some other type of block.

The stone part feels the trickiest to get right. I've removed about twice as much as shown in the picture below. Should I apply reinforcing mesh and plaster directly on it?

The stone wall is very uneven... so there will be many attachment points for the reinforcing mesh... or should I fill with plaster first and then reinforce before doing the "finishing plaster"?

The same question applies to general repairs. Should these be filled first with plaster, then reinforced, and then the surface layer plastered?

Rough-textured masonry wall with exposed stones and uneven surface, partially repaired with brown plaster, showing signs of chipping and wear.
