I am going to build a fence around the garden and have now set up and cemented the posts and all that myself.
The only thing I need now is the boards.
At the construction company here in town, they have 3.6 m and I need 2 m. They couldn't cut (?) them for me, so if I were to buy them there would be 1.6 m left over on each board. Asked if they could build sections and they gave me a quote of 43,000, which is for material, installation, and labor. I've never put up a fence before so I don't know if that is reasonable or not. I had thought about 10-15 max! Am I crazy or is that the price?:x
The plan right now is to find boards at the right height and set everything up myself.
Cut them to 1.8 meters, it doesn't matter if the fence becomes a bit lower.
If it does matter, you can add a plank horizontally as a finish on top and bottom.
it is about 35-40m long and 2m in height. will have the planks standing upright. (like the picture below) can't have it lower since I have four dogs that shouldn't be able to get over it.
will see if they can cut 2m since I need so many, should be possible.. otherwise, it's a trip to Norway where I know they can help.
but shouldn't all construction companies have a saw machine and be able to cut for their customers?
bought too large lengths that didn't fit in the van, but had to stand with a regular handsaw and saw it myself.
I don't really have an answer to your questions but instead have an alternative solution. Maybe you've already thought about and dismissed it, what do I know...?
As I understand it, you have at least three problems...? Partly, your local construction company only has the board you want in a 3x60 length? Partly, you can't transport boards longer than about 2 meters, and you don't have a saw to cut long boards yourself?
Firstly; is there really no other lumberyard in the area that might have longer boards? Värmland isn't that far from civilization, after all?
Secondly; IF you find longer boards, do you have a hitch on your car or the possibility to borrow a car with a hitch from someone nearby? Rent/borrow a trailer and bring home your 4.2-meter-long boards. Then hopefully you have a warehouse like Jula or Biltema nearby and you can go there to buy a cheap miter saw for a few hundred kronor plus a higher quality saw blade and cut the boards yourself. If you're lucky, you have a helpful neighbor who owns and is happy to lend you such a saw.
If you don't have any other lumberyard available, haavard has a good solution that not only is a bit more elegant but will also protect the end grain on your upright boards.
Another tip: I have built a fence with upright boards myself and made a fatal mistake. I didn't consider that the upright boards exert quite a bit of force on the horizontal beams, especially if they get wet. After a while, I had a fence with a nice (?) u-shaped top edge. My horizontal beams were simply too weak and couldn't support the weight of the upright boards, causing them to bend. It wasn't good.... I don't know what dimensions you will have, but the longer the span between ground posts, the more weight, and the stronger horizontal beams you'll need....
Best regards,
ToRy
P.S. I did some calculations on the amount of lumber you need and what it might cost... If you buy treated 22x95 at Byggmax, you'll pay almost 8000:- just for them, plus posts and horizontal beams, screws, brackets, and other things you might need. The company's total price of 43,000kr doesn't sound completely unreasonable then, I think.
I can transport 2m. Where I bought the poles, they were 4.6 and longer, which didn't fit in the van, so I had to cut off about 2m for them to fit. I have saws and many other tools at home; if you live in the countryside, I think it's a must. I'm building and renovating the entire house/fence, so it's necessary. I was more referring to how in Norway I know everyone should have a saw machine and be able to cut for their customers for free
There are probably several, but this was the closest with a "known" brand. I live in the countryside, so I prefer not to have to travel too far, like into Karlstad (too much work and too little time). My dogs sometimes like to jump, and I'm setting it up mostly because of them. I'm 1.60, and one can jump up to my chest and is now only a year old, so it must be at least 2m tall.
Thanks for the tip. I thought about making it as stable as possible, so I've cemented all the poles properly, and they are about 2 meters apart. I'll make sure the rails are sturdy; I want the fence to last for many years
I had to saw lumber with a handsaw at Byggmax, so it's true that they don't do it everywhere for their customers. But if we consider Byggmax, you can also shop online, and then you get home delivery. That should also be a solution.
No, I didn't think I needed a building permit. I live in the countryside and the nearest neighbor is far away so it doesn't affect them.
20cm + I don't think will cause any harm.
