We are expanding our summer cottage by about 50 m2, where we will have an open ceiling. We have decided to have paneling on the ceiling (vertical towards the ridge), but we're not sure which one...

It should be completely smooth. V-joint, end-joint, tongue and groove, rough sawn...??

There is pre-painted paneling that looks okay, but we are afraid that over time there will be yellow spots on the knots. We think it might be better to buy untreated wood, apply knot sealer, prime, nail it up, and paint a final coat on the ceiling. Is there any truth to that? And if so - how long should the wood be indoors before starting to paint?

I've heard somewhere that you don't need knot sealer for pine, only for spruce (or was it the other way around?!?) - is that true?

We recently installed paneling in a bedroom and chose unfinished paneling (pine) which we painted ourselves and the result turned out well. Buy proper knot sealer and make sure to seal all the knots thoroughly. The paneling we chose was from Valbo Trä and they have a product catalog with their different profiles. Check out http://www.valbotra.se/sidor/produkter.htm to see the different products. If you want a completely smooth panel, it's probably their Glattpanel you want since all others have a groove. The TGV panel has a small groove and the faspanel a large groove. We painted the paneling right after opening the packaging. First, we applied knot sealer twice to all the knots, then two coats of Becker Panelgrund, and lastly, one coat of Scotte 2, then we nailed up the paneling and eventually, we will finish paint the paneling two times. A nail gun makes the work easier when you’re putting up the paneling.
