Hello, we have started renovating our house from 1947. From previous occupants, there was a major renovation in the 70s where they opened up walls and doors.

We removed the side moldings yesterday on one of these doorways, and to our surprise, the entire doorway is surrounded by brick. We expected a beam above the opening since there is both an upper floor and attic in the house.

We know that this wall is load-bearing through the house, and even the chimney is on this wall.

Is this okay? Or did they come up with a creative solution in the 70s?

  • Brick archway above a doorway, with exposed bricks after removing trim, questioning the structural support in a 1947 house renovation.
  • Doorway with exposed brick and removed side panels in a 1947 house renovation; visible vacuum cleaner and open view to another room with a window.
  • Close-up of a brick doorway with visible mortar and worn edges, lacking a traditional lintel, suggesting a past renovation in a supportive wall.
Then you probably need to look above the bricks to know what happened, there might be a reinforcement there, or not.....
