Hello!
My partner, as the headline suggests, has opened up part of the wall between the kitchen and the living room now that we're remodeling the kitchen. A temporary opening has been sawed, it will be made nicer later, but I'm wondering how we should make the edge look nice afterwards.
I'm contemplating whether we should just put a trim (I'm not quite sure what it's called) on the edge or put a slightly wider trim on the edge and also have a small trim next to it on the wall?
I hope you understand what I mean
We've also removed part of the opening to the hallway where our bedrooms are, before it was the same at the top of the opening as it is to the other rooms (see picture). It became much more open and looks nice considering the kitchen is right next to it.
How should we make that opening look the nicest?
One idea we have is to just try to even it out on the left opening and then put a board on the right side and fill it so it looks roughly the same on both openings.
In other words, not putting any trim/frame. In the ceiling, we will tidy up the sides of the plank so it just looks like it goes slightly down into the opening. Then we'll paint everything white.
What do you think of that? Or do you have other suggestions that might be better?
The explanation got a little messy but I hope you understand what I mean, otherwise, feel free to ask
There is Dörromfattning which is white lacquered MDF 16mm thick in varying widths, take 10mm larger than the wall's thickness. Install and finish with soft sealant.
available at virtually all hardware stores.
Could that be something?
Yes, that might work well. Sounds like it.
Do you then place them around everything, even in the ceiling? I'm thinking that on the larger opening there's a longer wall on the right side.
Also on that, and the ceiling?
On the smaller opening, it's a bit tricky on the side where it appears blue. It might be a bit awkward to get it there but maybe it can be patched/fixed up beforehand?
Another variant we've thought of is to just patch and smooth it out and then sand/paint it. (?)
But maybe these door surrounds are good. If one wants slightly sturdier frames, are there such options and would it look nice?
The problem is on the sides where it continues with a longer wall as well as the side where it's not even.
And then the ceiling.
On the wall that's horizontally divided for a bit, would it look nice with a slightly broader moulding there you think?
I have no idea how we're going to make this look nice, but I don't regret that we brought it up. It's really nice & fresh to open it up more. Now we just need to make it look nice again.
Thanks for the help so far. I just have a bit more to figure out.
Or to make me feel more confident before we proceed.
A bit difficult to see in the pictures. I think it will be good with the recommended door frame. If you continue with these in the ceiling, you'll get a marked boundary between the rooms. You may need to put up some framework in the opened hole so that you have something to attach the moldings to.
If you have a wall that you want completely smooth, there is renovation gypsum for that. It's difficult to putty large irregularities and make it nice. Renovation gypsum boards are thin, six mm thick gypsum boards.
I see that there is also electricity up in the ceiling. Perhaps the wiring went to wall outlets near the floor? If you open up a bit in the wall, you can run a new flexible conduit to the outlet if it is to remain.
