I used old self-leveling compound that I laid tiles on. It mixed well and flowed out nicely, so I thought it was fine to use despite being old. The bag had been unopened in an outdoor shed for a few years. It looked a bit strange once it had set and had quite a few holes in it, but what I was more concerned about was the strange odor. I thought it might disappear over time, and the appearance wouldn't be an issue since I'm laying tiles over it. It's been 9 months since the bathroom was finished, and you can still notice the strange smell. It's not so bad that you can't stand it, but I'm worried if it could be some harmful odor that shouldn't be inhaled, like sulfur, ammonia, or something else. The primer I used had also expired, so it could be that causing the odor as well. I don't remember the brands of the self-leveling compound or the primer. Does anyone have an idea of what the odor could be from, whether it will disappear on its own, or if there's a dangerous substance that needs to be removed and redone? Thanks in advance for your response.
