The entire wall is smooth and homogeneous. Screw in the upper part and nail in the lower? Or should I screw in the upper and glue in the lower?

Screw in the upper and glue in the lower + possibly try to nail in some nail so that the board stays until the glue has set.
Nail gun in a brick wall is not a good combination, it can end badly.

Now I know that. Initially, I had planned to do wide puttying, but after an entire upper floor, I got tired of it, and a staircase is also quite tricky to balance in with a ladder.
