Hello! We have a house from 1940 with a small guest room that we plan to freshen up. As you can see in the pictures, there have been moisture issues previously, and the previous owner installed parquet flooring. The plan is to fix the walls, paint, and lay tiles on the floor. Before starting this, I would appreciate any tips on what to consider.

I believe the moisture issues stem from before drainage around the house was done, but it still gets damp down there during the summer.

Thanks in advance

  • A corner of a room with damaged white plaster wall and wooden floor; visible signs of moisture issues.
  • Wall with signs of moisture damage near a window, above a radiator in a 1940s house guest room.
  • Damaged wall with plaster peeling off, exposing underlying material near floor in an old house, indicating moisture issues. Pipes visible along the right side.
You could have checked with a moisture meter to see if it's coming in through the wall or the floor. If you renovate the wall but the moisture continues to come in, there's a high risk you'll need to redo everything again in a few years.

And how should I interpret the values from a moisture meter? If it's higher in the floor than the wall, does it mean it's coming in through the floor?
