I am really ignorant in construction and materials, have sought answers from some builders and always get expensive options such as tiling the walls or re-laying with treated wood.
Here's the situation. I want to renovate a patio (walls) of about 20 sqm as the existing wall doesn't look good at all (old ugly concrete). However, I am very budget-limited, preferably not wanting to exceed 250 SEK/sqm. The most important thing is that it can be painted over to white (or is already white) and withstand rain/moisture, etc., since the patio is obviously outdoors. Would, for example, a fiber cement backing board work? Oil-hardened board? Masonite board? I have asked the builders I have previously hired and get conflicting uncertain information. Most of them seem to have only worked with wood and concrete/brick for outdoor use. Does anyone have experience with this and know?

The easiest thing would be to just paint the concrete, right? If it is uneven and in poor condition, you might need to chip away loose parts and plaster the wall. I wouldn't put up any kind of board on top of concrete on a balcony anyway.
I think you'll be satisfied if you go to the paint store and go through how to do the preparation work and then get some good paint to use. 👍👍👍

There are skirting boards that can withstand being outdoors, but they might break the budget... They are often made of fiber cement, so a "regular" fiber cement board that is painted with suitable paint (silicate paint?) should work well.
