In my house, which was built in 1893, there is this corner in the hall on the ground floor.
When I bought the house five years ago, a wardrobe was standing in the corner, and some sort of fabric was attached to the wall in the corner. I believe it was glued on. On what I then thought was an old chimney stack. I had the wardrobe removed and the "fabric" torn down. After that, I had painters paint what I assumed was an old chimney stack white.
I quickly noticed that the corner did not have a plastered texture but rather a smooth painted surface. This surface has now started to crack, as you can see in the photos. Probably because the paint used is not suitable for the substrate.
In the places where the paint has come off, I have now had the opportunity to see what I thought was an old chimney stack under the white paint. I am beginning to doubt that it is an old chimney stack. That is, ordinary plaster and mortar. The surface does not feel as rough as a masonry/plastered wall should feel but rather smooth, with a certain "texture." Slightly glossy surface, not particularly coarse.
What can this be? What materials were used in the past, could have been renovated at any time, behind, for example, a tile stove or another fireplace? Could it be some form of board? Could it be built with possibly lightweight concrete? Asbestos cement boards? Or something else?
Since the paint has come off and I would like to strip all the paint again and repaint, I want to try to find out what is underneath before taking this action.
The thickness of any board or something that has been built up is about 4 cm. On both sides. This leads me to suspect some form of board. It would be difficult to build up surfaces that are almost exactly the same thickness. But, of course, it can be done. However, the left and right sides are not the same width. The left side is about 67.5 cm, and the right side is about 62 cm. The height is at least 2.5 meters, but possibly the material continues even under the ceiling moldings. Cannot be seen. The color is brown/beige, and you can see some variations in the material in terms of color, size, and structure in what is on the surface. Hard to describe. I hope it shows in the picture.
What material could have been used? Assuming that it should be some material suitable for use near a fireplace, e.g., behind a tile stove. That is, something that can withstand higher temperatures.
