Today at work, I was standing in the elevator hall watching a painter who was plastering the joints in drywall. It looked like he was taping with wide masking tape at the joint (instead of fiberglass or paper tape). Could it have been masking tape or is there self-adhesive paper tape on a roll? It looked very convenient anyway...

Self-adhesive fiberglass tape comes on a roll and might be mistaken for tape at first glance. I have personally wondered why there is no self-adhesive paper tape (at least I have never seen it) - it would have made life a bit easier...

This was a papptejp, standing just a few meters from him. It was a little yellowish too, just like masking tape usually is. I regret not asking him, though he didn't seem to be in the best mood, so I refrained.

Could probably have been regular wide masking tape. It should do the same job as filling with a paper strip?

Sure, but there is paper tape for drywall joints. I've come across the stuff at a paint store some time. It was probably meant for simple joints between regular drywall. I just got angry and now I always use fiberglass mesh tape.

I myself don't know what is best, but have heard that the paper tape is much better than fiberglass?

You don't happen to know who manufactures it? If not, where did you encounter it? I've asked around at a few places but have only been met with shaking heads...

(Let's not turn this into a discussion about paper vs. fiberglass tape, there are a myriad of threads about that already).

Available at Colorama... and recommended! ;)

Don't know if it matters, but I put a layer of compound and then press in the paper tape. It's a bit like reinforcing concrete, but perhaps it doesn't have much significance in this case. But it sure sounds convenient.

Thanks for the tip! Now I know where to turn next time it's needed.

That's what I usually do too, and it works. But you always try to find shortcuts ;)

A tip that often comes up for those who have trouble sticking the tape to the filler is to glue it before applying the filler. It should be equivalent to using double-sided tape. Whether the tip is good or not, I don't know since I haven't tried it.

There is also a special putty for this! For example, Beckers Breplasta J
