You can find cheap marble pieces on Blocket, how easy is it to cut a piece to a size that suits you?

There are no major problems with the right tools. Marble is quite soft and easy to work with. If you have an angle grinder with a tile or similar disc, it easily cuts through a marble slab.

Quite easy with an angle grinder. Clamp boards on both sides (under and over) of the cut with clamps to avoid splinters.

Might be a good idea to water thoroughly as well.

Rent a wet saw

Thank you for your responses!
When cutting the board as you suggested, will the cut be "smooth" like pre-cut edges, or does the cut need additional finishing?

Grind the edges after cutting.

With?
Excuse an ignorant question...

Marble is relatively soft, so a regular orbital sander with progressively finer sandpaper works well.

The cut won't be "smooth" like the rest of the board. I assume you mean the board has been sanded/polished before. The new cut will be matte. It should be possible to polish this up with wet sandpaper in various grits if you're willing.

How much material do you need? It's likely much easier and not very expensive to order this new.
