Hello everyone

Built a new house last summer, Villa Visingsö 1½ story villa with Smålandsvillan. I'm now finishing the second floor this weekend, the last strips of wallpaper and the final square meters of flooring...

I still have to build a stair railing on the second floor,

Does anyone have building tips on how to do it? I've never built anything until we got the house.

I'm attaching pictures of how it looks now and roughly how we want it. But I have no idea how to do it and what to consider.

So in short: How do you do it?

2 pictures show how we have it now... the last picture of how we roughly envision it (but white)

Regards, Micke

  • Wooden staircase without railing leading to an unfinished second floor with visible floorboards and a wall under construction.
  • Staircase leading to a partially finished second floor with ceiling lights illuminated and a striped ceiling design.
  • Wooden railing on an unfinished second floor beside a window with a view. Walls and ceiling are clad with light wood panels, and the floor is wooden.
Fun project and nice railing. You start with the outermost posts which I would guess are 95*95 and cut them to the desired length. Then you cut the horizontal beams, which are 45*95, to the desired length. Then you nail these together as they should be. Next, you cut the vertical beams 45*95 so they fit tightly between the two horizontal beams and nail two nails from the top and two from the bottom. Then you can mount it where it should be by screwing between the standing beams.

That's how I would do it, and it will probably be the easiest way. Prime and do a regular coat before assembling it to make painting easier. Then just fill the holes and paint one final time. However, if you don't want the screws that go into the floor to show, use nails instead because it becomes difficult to disassemble if you screw and fill over.

Thank you for the quick response.

How do I attach the entire railing afterward? I suppose a couple of thicker screws in the wall. Do I then anchor it down into the floor as well?

Yes.

If you are inexperienced in building, I would recommend completely skipping the nailing. Do as huggan describes, but pre-drill and screw instead (1-2 mm smaller drill hole than the screws in the piece you are attaching to, the same size as the screws in the piece you are screwing through). It takes longer, but turns out straight and good even if you are inexperienced.

Don't forget to use a carpenter's square for straight 90-degree corners.

How did it turn out? Planning to do something similar in the torp.
