I'm planning to replace a glulam beam, current opening size is 3630mm, dimensions of the current beam are 115x225. I'm thinking of enlarging the opening to 4300 since I want to remove a column that's awkwardly placed.

I've checked various guides, etc., but the current beam with the current opening size doesn't even seem to be approved with those dimensions, and if I extend it, I conclude I need to go up to 115x405, which seems a bit much.

Is that really necessary, or could I manage with 115x270 or 115x315?

Hello,
The larger the opening, the more the span increases, and this also means that the beam's height increases.
Another option to reduce height is to dimension a steel beam. But it also sounds strange that the beam's height doubles when it's just about a 1-meter larger opening.
