Hello,

I have drained my house and now need to backfill. How do I know if my excavated masses are "flowable/loose clay"?

Is there a test for this that one can do oneself?

For example, I tried mixing the masses in water to create a slurry. I then let it stand for a few hours. I was then able to push my hand about 5 cm into the masses. Could it then be flowable clay?

Here, it's literally about rolling up your sleeves :D

Take a lump of clay, about the size of a meatball and a bit more. Spit properly in your hand and work the clay and spit into a round ball, then flatten it in the style of a hamburger patty. Then, place your biggest thumb right in the center of the patty, press down firmly, release, and study the impression.

If there are cracks around the impression, it's not slip clay. If the surface is shiny but dulls within a minute, it is slip clay.
