Hello,

We would like to build a passive house and are thinking of doing it ourselves. Quite often, one uses I-joists, but here in the link, it states that they have 10% worse thermal bridging than 'larsen-truss'. https://emupassive.com/2021/06/10/thermal-bridging-of-i-joist-vs-larsen-truss/#:~:text=A Larsen truss, with its,web of an I-Joist.

My questions:
  • Does anyone have experience with them?
  • Can they be built on site or do they have higher requirements?
  • Alternatively, where can they be purchased?
They are better for insulation and easier to handle. However, it might cost extra time or money.

We will be building a 1.5 story villa, so load-bearing strength doesn't matter.

Thanks in advance and have a good day,

Sander from Skåne.

Check out VillaVarm, they have even better wall studs.

I will also be building a Larsen truss (on-site) in a new two-story building. You can absolutely do this yourself if you're handy with tools. Talk to a local architect to find out connection details to ensure that thermal bridging and moisture reduction are addressed (especially at window, roof, and foundation connections).

Make sure ventilation, heating, airtightness, and thermal resistance (insulation) are coordinated and balanced. Therefore, it's a good idea to talk to an architect or a passive house consultant who has the software to calculate this. Good luck!
