Laminated timber vs regular wood stud?
I am going to reinforce a carport, I'm tired of shoveling off the snow all the time. I will put up a new support beam and also replace an old support beam with a thicker one. I'm considering using a glulam beam and therefore wonder how much stiffer it is compared to a corresponding wooden joist? Assume low-quality, like Byggmax/Bauhaus/Skånskabygg for both the beam and joist.
E-module and breaking point, or rules of thumb are appreciated!
Moreover, I wonder how to protect a glulam beam from moisture? Is it the same as a pine plank? I mean, no extreme requirements, it's going to be protected directly under the carport roof.

Thanks! Now I can calculate. Seems like it will manage with the thickest boards, it will be cheaper, but it will look sleeker with glued laminated timber. We'll see what it turns out to be, calculations will be done here.
