I searched and tried everything I could to find the best method to treat a concrete countertop that would be used in an outdoor kitchen. Since we wanted to keep the color as light as possible, we opted for acrylic lacquer, specifically a semi-matte floor lacquer.

But it turned out to be useless. After 5 layers, while the color is fine, it offers no protection at all. If a bit of water sits on it, like after rain, the concrete becomes dark, and there are already color variations in the concrete that weren't there before. I don't even want to think about what would happen if something more aggressive got on the countertop, like wine or lemon.

But did I completely misunderstand the purpose of acrylic lacquer? So now I'm planning to sand everything down and start anew. But what should I use?

I want to keep the light surface but have a durable finish that doesn't let anything through.
