The insulation around the pipes is probably asbestos. It's probably guaranteed to be in the pipe bends, right?

  • Pipes in a basement ceiling, wrapped in insulation, with concerns about potential asbestos presence.
  • Pipes with insulation material, possibly asbestos, in a tight corner with signs of wear and debris.
  • Damaged pipe insulation possibly containing asbestos, showing wear near pipe bends.
  • White insulated pipes in a basement ceiling, potentially containing asbestos, secured with black zip ties. Worn and textured wall surface visible.
No, not guaranteed. But there is a risk that the bends contain asbestos. It's not the insulation itself (the wool) but a powdery substance that lies inside the winding.

Very likely in bends and offsets, yes. Found in the hard material that resembles plaster. However, the exposed insulation on the straight section in image 1 looks like regular mineral wool. (There might also be small amounts in the white paint that the pipes are painted with.)

Thanks for the response

I'll have to send it for analysis if I want to be sure. Thanks for the answer.

I had exactly the same in my basement. Handled it as if it were asbestos.

The hard shell in bends and joints is most likely asbestos, yes. If you have a white felt mat wrapped around the pipe under the insulation, this is also asbestos.

What can be seen in the pictures looks like rock wool and gypsum. If you're going to remove the pipes, cut them a bit away from the bends and take them to the landfill.
