is this asbestos? (image)

Currently demolishing an old shed at home and noticed that the interior walls appear to be asbestos boards? It would be great if someone experienced could say whether it is or not.

What makes you think it's asbestos? Looks like Masonite to me.

The neighbor came and said it could be asbestos. We have an asbestos panel at home in the boiler room, and they are not entirely different. I have no idea, but it would be good to know It's quite heavy, and if you break off a piece, it's like tile when you tap on it.

Masonite can be like that, then there's harder masonite almost like those old lunchboxes (I can't remember what the material is called). And really old insulation like glass wool (it's really good at itching if you're unlucky), however, there's a similar one with asbestos.

It's damn similar to the ceiling I had on an LB house from '59, which was asbestos.

The resemblance to tile when you tap on it also suggests asbestos.
Where did you tear this from? and how was it mounted there?

There were both ceilings and interior walls. They were just nailed in place.

To be truly certain, you must submit it for analysis, otherwise, it's just guesses.

Test and try burning a piece, asbestos doesn't burn, does it?
I think it looks like masonite.

Ceiling and walls in the living area argue against eternit anyway.
Mudroom and boiler room are classic eternit spots.

Asbestos does not burn (that's why it was so widely used).

took a gas burner and it didn't burn, barely glowed

How long did you burn it? You probably have to count on at least 20-30s before masonite glows. Treat it as asbestos anyway. Safest that way. Are you going to demolish more? Odd to have that in the ceiling...

It is 98% certain that it is asbestos. Touch it as little as possible without protective equipment.

Weird color. Looks like tretex, but if it's hard and doesn't burn, it might be some form of eternit (which is usually cement gray). In that case, one should see sharp fibers on the fractured surfaces that only smolder when you try to burn them.

And it's not unusual to find eternit in old garages or spaces one wanted to fireproof for some reason.
