Hi, my window trims stick out a few millimeters here and there compared to the surrounding plaster wall. How forgiving is the casing against that? And if I need to plane them down a bit, is there some kind of tool to draw with that lies flatter against the wall than a pencil? Or some trick? It's not possible to cut straight because the frame/inner wall isn't straight, so the trim needs to be a little different depth in different places (millimeter differences).

Split a pencil and apply a thin tape so the exposed lead doesn't rub off.

A carpenter's pencil that is sharpened long and narrow should work.

But you need a straight edge to attach the lining against, so it won't be so good if you plane down a little here and there, or am I misunderstanding?

Haha no, you're not misunderstanding, but it's a jxla mess because the wall is anything but straight, so it's incomprehensible how it's going to work no matter what I do now...

When I renovated an old house, I placed the moldings against the wall and drew a line following the edge. Then I placed a straight ruler over it so I had a straight line to cut along and attach the moldings to.
