I went to look at a house built in the 60s that has a room built in a cold attic. There was an inspection door/hatch on each side of the outer walls to be able to look at the ceiling in the crawl space. When I opened one of the hatches, I saw a black spot that is likely some kind of moisture/mold spot. So now I'm wondering:
1) Is it generally a bad idea to build a room in a cold attic? Since an "inner ceiling" has been built in the room itself, you can't inspect the roof, other than the crawl space. The roof was replaced in 2010 - so surely they should have replaced the wood if they saw it was affected?
2) The house has, like many 60s houses, natural ventilation, and then the thoughts turn to a mechanical FTX system - surely that would mean you would likely have to tear down the room in the attic?
Other tips and info for a first-time homebuyer are welcome.
