Installing horizontal cladding, how do I do it?

I'm going to install horizontal paneling on my garage. The question is how to make it look the best. Should I vary the joints as much as possible, or should I place all the joints on the same stud and try to cover with some type of cover board?

Then I wonder which nails I should use? I have 75mm and 90mm.
