I am looking for tips on the best way to provide windows and exterior doors with trim in new houses where the window recesses usually protrude a few mm relative to the wall plaster.
There must be a good way that doesn't involve modifying existing recesses, since most new houses can also be fitted with rustic trim as an option.
It doesn't seem very nice to attach the trim against the recess instead of over it.

If you don't want a gap between the wall and the molding, you don't actually have many options;
- Planing down the jambs to the wall's edge is the best solution, in my opinion.
- Nail the molding and fill the gap with a suitable sealant. Requires masking if you're not planning to repaint the wall. There's a risk of cracks in the sealant depending on the size of the gap.
- Plane down thin strips and glue them to the back of the molding to cover the gap. If you want smooth moldings, you can plane down the lip on a stepped molding.
