Hi! I want to install a ceiling lamp, and where I want it, there's a steel beam in the ceiling. How do I proceed and what tools are needed?

Is the steel beam visible in the ceiling, with no other surface layer?

If the lamp is very light, it might be enough to glue a bracket with epoxy glue.

However, I would probably choose to drill and tap for a machine-threaded screw,
or alternatively use a screw + nut.

An M5 screw should suffice.

How have you planned to run the electricity?

Magnet if it's nicely painted or weld if it has a more rugged look. It all depends on the style. :D

Thank you for your responses! The steel beam is not visible. I've plastered the ceiling, and there's probably a slight gap between the plasterboard and the steel beam. I estimate it's about 2-4 cm before reaching the steel. Yes, it's quite a large chandelier to put up.... around 12 kg :eek: Haha, yes, the magnet might work ;), but I think fastening the lamp with screws is a better idea. There's an electrical outlet about 20 cm from the spot where the chandelier will be placed.
 
By the way, I was wondering... if you use the magnet, the steel beam and the magnet must be directly in contact with each other, right?? Or does it work with a few cm gap between them?

No, it absolutely doesn't work!

And I would advise against welding inside the "living room." I think you might have a little problem with the insurance company when you need to rebuild the house.

Sounds like my guess with drill-thread-screw is the best.

With some luck, you might be able to run the electrical conduit all the way to the lamp (with new wire, of course), so the installation looks nicer.

You mean to run the power cord inside the ceiling? And no, welding is NOT an option! ;)

Yes, exactly. Or rather run the "fixed installation" to where the lamp will be placed.

It should look nicer than if it’s connected externally.
But maybe it’s ok anyway. What are 20 centimeters...

But the lamp cord itself you probably shouldn't put over the inner ceiling.
 
Now, I do believe that there are quite large margins when calculating which beam to use, but one should know that both welding and drilling affect the strength. I've heard that in some wind turbines, they neither want to drill nor weld; they use magnets to attach the ladders you climb to the top with.

There are ladders in wind turbines attached with magnets; however, it's not the standard procedure. Instead, there are welded pipes with threads that the ladders are bolted into! ;) But sure, the magnets work, quite thrilling to rely on them 100m up! ;P

Not that it's relevant right now, but why not weld? I've had plumbers at my place who used a gas torch 2cm from the wall to solder copper pipes. Nothing caught fire... Of course, you have to take certain precautions!
